White Star Quarry Plunge

Gibsonburg Ohio

On September 22, 2007, Evan Graver and Cory Anderson took a plunge into the waters of White Star Quarry (NW Ohio).  Water visibility was about 25 feet and water temperature was 72 degrees at the surface.  It was a perfect day to enjoy this activity.  Entrance into the quarry shoreline had a ramp sloped  10-20 degrees with a loose gravel texture.  Getting into the water was not difficult and getting out was about the same - slight assistance might be needed if geared.  A slight slope into the 3 foot depths before the quarry dropped off.  The drop off was a very clean and visibility remained 20 plus feet throughout the dive.  Check out the website link for all of the White Star Quarry details.

Nelson Ledges Quarry Dip
http://www.nlqp.com

On September 16, 2007, an adaptive dive occurred at Nelson Ledges (NE Ohio).  The Quarry is about 40 feet deep and about 5 foot visibility.  The entrance was a sandy beach entrance with a 40-60 degree slope.  Assistance was needed to enter and leave the shoreline, especially when geared.  This quarry is perfect if training for a limited visibility dive, any kind of rescue diver training, or just a quick test of gear before the official dive.

 Mid Ohio H.S.A. Picnic at
Portage Quarry in Bowling Green Ohio

By: Evan Graver

Mid-Ohio Divers hosted their second annual HSA Fund Raiser and Dive Weekend
at Portage Quarry near Bowling Green, Ohio the weekend of September 8th and 9th.

The Winking Lizard catered a dinner of ribs and chicken the night of the 8th. Following the
dinner, raffle drawings were held for gear donated by event sponsors such as Cressi Sub and Leisure Pro.
Prizes included a new BC, regulators, gear bags and an underwater camera. A 50/50 drawing was held to raise money
for installing a lift at Portage Quarry for the aid of helping handicapped divers in and out of the water. In addition to
the lift the money has been used to train and certify thirty-three HSA instructors and dive buddies from Mid-Ohio Divers and
to help raise awareness for the HSA and handicapped diving opportunities in the central Ohio area.

Saturday's event was well attended by thirty plus people with two handicapped divers in attendance.
One of which was doing her open water certification dives, the second was the author, an SSI Master Diver.

Jim Rice, Portage Quarry operator is also making improvements to the walk-in area at the east end of the quarry by
installing a concrete ramp to provide access for wheelchairs entering and exiting the water.

More details can be found on the Portage Quarry website.
